DESCRIPTION:Join extension personnel for the 3rd Annual UMass Soil Health Mini School on March 26th in South Deerfield MA. The full-day workshop will include hands-on workshops and presentations on current soil health topics. $30 for the full day\, including lunch and snacks. \nClick here to register online.\nPlease email Artie Siller with any questions. \n\nWorkshop descriptions\nDr. Joshua Arnold\, Assistant Extension Professor in urban agriculture at UMass will share his experience in testing urban soils for harmful contaminants in urban agroecosystems\, including challenges and successes. Participants will learn about soil sampling methods developed with community members and urban farmers to reduce costs and interpret risk. He will also share his experience adopting these methods to farmland around Asheville\, NC\, after Hurricane Helene. \nDr. Sam Corcoran\, Soil and Plant Nutrient Testing Lab Manager at UMass will lead a hands-on demonstration of pH testing tools available to farmers. She will cover why pH matters for plant growth and soil health and discuss what to look for when purchasing a pH meter. \nDr. Amelia Magistrali\, Associate Extension Educator in Soil Health at UConn will lead a workshop focusing on soil health and testing considerations for high tunnels and raised beds\, with an emphasis on organic matter management. The session will present some initial findings from a soil sampling pilot study in high tunnels and raised beds and discuss research and recommendations for these types of systems. Amelia will also cover some of the challenges and recommendations for nutrient and water dynamics in high tunnels and raised beds. \nArtie Siller\, Soil Health Extension Educator at UMass will present research results on winter cover cropping mixes\, tillage\, and cover crop planting time. They will then lead a field walk to tour field research plots and discuss winter soil management and cover crops at the UMass research farm.

DESCRIPTION:  \nAllen Farm welcomes the dairy community to their family farm in the beautiful town of Sheffield.\n About Allen Farms Morven Allen started Allen Farms from scratch more than 33 years ago two dairy cows and some rented land in the southern corner of the Berkshires. In 2018\, son Ian joined the farm as a full partner after graduating from SUNY Cobleskill with a major in agricultural business. Despite the challenges\, from unpredictable weather to fluctuating milk prices\, the Allen family team worked together\, their bond strengthening with each hurdle they overcame. Today\, Morven and Ian have grown the operation to milking 550 cows and cropping more than 1600 acres of owned and leased land. They also raise all replacement Heifers and some steers on three satellite locations. Ian also does custom work for other farms in the area. Partners are encouraged to attend together! \n“I got so much from the program\, both in information and connections\,” shared one participant. “The format was a well-balanced mix of instruction\, homework and participation. I hope I can translate at least part of what I learned into the reality of our family farm’s future. I’d recommend the training to anyone with a family farm!” \nThe fee is $100 per farm\, including all materials and support between classes. \nFarmers are required to attend all three days. There will be homework between sessions. DESCRIPTION:Keep Homestead Museum Presents Dairy Farming Event\nMONSON — The Keep Homestead Museum will present “Dairy Farming in Monson” on Sunday\, May 1\, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. in the barn. We will be visiting with some of the descendants of dairy farms past and present. At one time\, Monson had twenty-seven (27) farms related to the dairy business. Today there is only one farm that is still producing milk. \nIn addition to a descendant of one of Monson’s oldest dairy farms that is still producing milk\, descendants from other farms will relate the history of their farm as to how and when it was acquired\, size of herd\, milk routes\, etc. For those farms whose descendants cannot be present\, we will speak for them as their history was related to us. Additionally\, the Museum will have on display several items used in the early milk operation and delivery business. \nAt one time\, the Keep Homestead Museum property was a very prosperous dairy farm. Upon her death\, Myra Keep Lovell Moulton donated all this property to the Town of Monson. The Museum is located at 35 Ely Road in Monson\, Massachusetts. The house and gift shop will be open from 1:00–3:30 p.m. for touring. Admission is free. Donations are accepted.
